Pair the impact statement with a specific, doable request for next time.
Why it works
Feedback without a clear forward request gives the receiver nowhere to go: they know what was wrong but not what "right" looks like. A specific behavioral request activates implementation-intention processes — the receiver can mentally rehearse the new behavior and plan for situations that trigger it, which is where real change happens.
How to do it
- After the impact, say: "Going forward, what I’d find helpful is…" and name one specific, observable action.
- Make the request behavioral ("please flag when you’re going to miss a deadline before it happens") not attitudinal ("be more reliable").
- Confirm understanding: ask them to say back what they’ll do differently.

Implementation-intention research robustly shows that specifying what, when, and how to perform a behavior dramatically improves follow-through compared to vague goal-setting. (rct)

Common mistake
Leaving the request open-ended ("just think about it") — which places the cognitive burden on the receiver without giving them a viable path, and makes follow-up awkward.
