Study the self as it appears during an ordinary task
While doing something routine, notice the image of yourself you are trying to keep up, and let it loosen rather than defend it.
Por que funciona
Genjōkōan begins its account of practice with the sentence that the study of the way is the study of oneself, and that studying oneself is forgetting oneself. Dōgen’s sense of “self” is not a self-concept; it is the one that is verified by things. In psychological terms, self-focused attention keeps attention circling how one appears, and noticing that loop without acting on it is one plausible route by which its grip can ease. That psychological reading is a bridge drawn by the present page, not Dōgen’s claim.
Como fazer
- Before anything else, feel both feet on the floor and let your eyes rest on the room, naming a few things you can see.
- Choose one routine task, such as washing up or answering email.
- Halfway through, notice what version of yourself you are trying to appear as: competent, calm, kind, or on time.
- Name it silently, for example “the one who looks organised,” and keep working.
- Let the image dissolve on its own rather than pushing it away; return to the task.
Evidência
The instruction is from Genjōkōan, in the Sōtōshū’s English edition. The link to self-focused attention is a modern psychological reading of that instruction. Duval and Silvia’s chapter is on self-focused attention as a psychological construct; this page does not claim that the Zen practice has been tested against it. (mechanistic)
Genjōkōan’s self is not the self-concept psychology studies. Reading the two together is interpretive, and the psychological mechanism has not been tested for this exercise. If noticing your self-image starts to feel destabilising, stop, return to your feet and the room, and see meditation-related challenges.

Erro comum
Turning self-study into self-criticism, cataloguing your faults. The text asks you to study the self and forget it; judgement tightens the grip the practice is meant to loosen.

Take a single sentence of Dōgen’s Genjōkōan and read it slowly, without moving to the next line until something in it has been noticed.
