When visualising makes you feel unreal or shaky, ground first
If an imagined figure leaves you dizzy, shaky or far from your body, stop it, come back to your senses and body, and talk to a teacher or clinician before going further.
Warum es wirkt
Deity practice asks the mind to hold a vivid image for a long time. Amihai and Kozhevnikov (2015) review new evidence that Vajrayāna and Hindu Tantric meditation types produce heightened sympathetic activation, and they state that these findings validate Buddhist scriptural descriptions of heightened arousal in Vajrayāna practice. Their 2014 study measured sympathetic arousal in deity and rigpa meditation. For some people a strong, sustained image can pull attention away from the body and the room. Grounding is the first step because it does not depend on the image. It returns attention to what is physically present, so the decision about whether to continue can be made from a steadier place.
So gehst du vor
- Open your eyes and name five things you can see in the room.
- Notice three sounds, then press your feet into the floor and feel the weight of your body where you are sitting or standing.
- Then stop the visualisation. Do not try to finish it or hold it steady.
- Stand up if you can, and walk slowly, or do one ordinary task such as washing your hands or making a drink, paying attention to the movements.
- Do not return to the visualisation that day. Tell a teacher you trust, or a clinician who understands meditation-related challenges, what happened, and follow their guidance on whether and when to resume.
- If thoughts of harming yourself come up, contact a crisis line or emergency service in your area now.
Evidenz
The Lindahl and colleagues mixed-methods study describes meditation-related challenges reported by Western Buddhists. The grounding steps here are general guidance, and the sources here include no trial of grounding against visualisation practice. (observational)
This is grounding guidance, not therapy. The Lindahl and colleagues study is descriptive. If the feeling persists, worsens or frightens you, get support from a clinician who understands meditation-related challenges, and read the meditation-related challenges page on this site, which covers the question “Is it normal to feel worse when you meditate?”.

- Learn what an empowerment involves before anything else
An empowerment is the ritual gate the tradition requires before deity yoga, and learning what it involves tells you what to ask a teacher.
- Begin with refuge and bodhicitta, the first inner preliminaries
In the ngöndro sequence, refuge and bodhicitta are the first inner preliminaries, and they come before the tantric practice.
- Study the view of emptiness that deity yoga presupposes
Deity yoga is defined as a clear appearance held together with emptiness, so the view of emptiness is studied before any image.
- Understand divine pride and pure appearance as technical terms
Divine pride and pure appearance are precise terms in the tradition, and knowing what they mean stops them sounding like self-inflation.
- Attend a public teaching as an observer, not a student
Sitting in on an open teaching at a centre lets you learn the vocabulary and the atmosphere before you decide anything about an empowerment.
- Start with one careful book on deity yoga
One introductory book, read slowly with its context, gives a firmer footing than several summaries that contradict each other. The 1987 edition introduces deity practice in the lower tantra classes, not the highest class this page describes.
- Read what the imagery studies measured, and what they did not
The 2009 deity-meditation study measured imagery performance, and reading its abstract shows what that finding does and does not cover.
