Guru yoga in the ngöndro: devotion to a teacher, received in a lineage

Learn the guru yoga that closes the inner preliminaries, with devotion to your own lineage teacher, and keep it in proportion to the rest of your life.

Warum es wirkt

Guru yoga is the last of the inner preliminaries in the common list. Tricycle’s essay “Bowing” frames the teacher as the one through whom “the world of the Buddha is opened to us,” and calls the guru a living manifestation of awakened mind. The Longchen Nyingtik ngöndro treats the visualisation of the lineage teachers as part of the practice, and includes “Receiving the Four Empowerments” as a visualisation inside it. Devotion is the tradition’s way of making the instruction received and the mind open to it; the practice is about trust in a lineage rather than in any single person.

So gehst du vor

  1. Ask a teacher of your own lineage to give you the guru yoga, with its visualisation and prayers, and the sequence to practise.
  2. Sit quietly and bring to mind the lineage teacher you were given instruction by, as your teacher has shown you.
  3. Recite the prayers at the pace agreed, letting the devotion stay open rather than forced.
  4. When the recitation ends, rest without a fixed image, and notice what the devotion brings up for you.
  5. Bring the same openness to ordinary conduct, with the ordinary respect and honesty you would give any good teacher.

Evidenz

In the Lotsawa House translation of Jigme Lingpa’s text, the closing note on the guru yoga says it “should be done according to the outer practice,” and refers the full practice to a separate text. The Longchen Nyingtik ngöndro includes a section on receiving the four empowerments within the practice. Tricycle’s essay “Bowing” describes the teacher’s place at the head of the refuge. (anecdotal)

No study has tested guru yoga. Devotion can be turned toward a single person in ways that are unhealthy; teachers in the tradition say the teacher is to be relied on for the instruction, and a practitioner should keep their own judgement and their safety. This page names no living teacher.

Häufiger Fehler

Treating a teacher as infallible and idealising them to the point of giving up your own judgement. Devotion in the tradition is paired with instruction and conduct, and a teacher who asks for blind obedience is a warning sign.
