Read one foundational text from each stream

Choose one short text each from Theravāda, Mahāyāna, Zen, Tibetan and Pure Land, and read it slowly, in translation, in the tradition’s own terms.

Por qué funciona

A summary of a school tells you what its teachers say about the texts; reading the text itself lets you see how the school frames its own ideal. The Theravāda discourse on setting the wheel of Dhamma in motion lays out the Four Noble Truths in the Buddha’s words. The Heart Sutra, read in the Mahāyāna and Zen traditions, compresses the teaching on emptiness into a few lines that are recited rather than analysed. The Platform Sutra presents the Chan teaching in the voice of its teacher, and the Tibetan Refuge text sets the bodhisattva’s aspiration inside the Vajrayāna path. The Pure Land sutras give the Amida story on which the nembutsu rests.

Cómo hacerlo

  1. Pick one text from each stream from the sources listed for this practice, and read the opening section of each before deciding.
  2. Read one text slowly, one paragraph a day, and write down the one line that you do not understand.
  3. Compare the ideal each text describes: the arahant, the bodhisattva, the awakened Chan master, the buddha of the Pure Land.
  4. Notice where two texts use the same word, such as the Dhamma or the Buddha, and mean different things by it.
  5. Bring the questions to a teacher or a study group, not only to a summary or an online comparison.

Evidencia

The texts cited are the scriptures or commentaries each tradition itself uses, in verified translations. No study has tested whether reading one of them changes a practitioner’s outcomes, so this practice rests on the traditions’ own use of the texts. (anecdotal)

Translations differ, and an unfamiliar text can read as contradictory when it is a different genre. The short texts here are a starting point, not a full map of any canon.

Fuentes

Error común

Reading a single line from one text and taking it as the view of the whole stream, which is what most online comparisons do.
