Choose a school by temperament and the life you actually live

Compare the branches by how their methods would fit your temperament, your schedule and your reasons for coming, and choose one to practise with for a season, not for life.

Pourquoi ça marche

The branches differ in emphasis, and the emphasis is what a beginner feels first. Berzin’s comparison of the Tibetan traditions covers how they differ in study, ritual and meditation. Rinzai Zen centres on a teacher and on kōans, Sōtō Zen on the posture of just sitting, and Theravāda on the discipline of the community and the stages of insight. A person who likes structure, a teacher they can meet in person, or a daily ritual is likely to find one emphasis easier to keep than another. The choice works when it follows the life a person lives, not an idea of the most advanced path.

Comment faire

  1. Write down your reasons for coming to Buddhism in one sentence, and note what you would like to be different after a season.
  2. Read the Basic Stance page of the Japanese Rinzai council and the Tibetan overview by Berzin, and mark the emphasis that appeals to you.
  3. Check which communities are near you, and how often they meet, before you choose a method you cannot reach.
  4. Choose one school and one practice to try for a season, and set a review date to ask whether it still fits.
  5. Talk to a teacher from that school before committing to formal vows or a long retreat.

Données probantes

The differences described come from the traditions and from scholarly overviews of them. No controlled study matches a person’s temperament to a Buddhist school, so the matching is an informed judgment and not a finding. (anecdotal)

Temperament is a loose guide. Schools overlap, teachers within one school differ, and a practice that fits a season may not fit a later one.
