Inner Child Work: Caring for the Parts of You That Feel Much Younger
Listening to the younger, more easily hurt part of you, and becoming the adult it can rely on
What do the two books on inner child work actually describe, and what evidence exists for them?
The publisher listing for John Bradshaw's Homecoming (1991) says the "inner child" "remains with us throughout our lives" and that we can learn to nurture that sometimes needy inner child. Charles Whitfield's Healing the Child Within and Bradshaw's Homecoming are two books in this area. This page does not give the books' own text. What it says about Whitfield's book comes from a published summary of it (Shortform), not from Whitfield's own text. What it says about Bradshaw's book comes from its publisher's description, not from the book. The one practice it keeps is a technique the publisher names, writing a letter with the non-dominant hand. No randomised controlled trial of either method was found.
Most people know the moment: a small slight lands far harder than it should, and for a few seconds you feel about seven years old. Inner child work takes that experience seriously. Two books in this area are Charles Whitfield's Healing the Child Within and John Bradshaw's Homecoming (1991). Neither book's text was read for this page. Bradshaw's publisher listing names several techniques, and this page keeps only the one that can be done from the listing itself. Affirmations are left out on purpose. No randomised controlled trial of the approach was found. Schema therapy's imagery rescripting has been tested in trials; its limited reparenting, a related idea, was not found tested separately, and is covered on the schema-therapy page. The closely related idea of exiled parts belongs to Internal Family Systems.
Pratiques
Comment ces pratiques s'articulent
Bradshaw's publisher listing says we can learn to nurture "that sometimes needy inner child", and that the "inner child" "remains with us throughout our lives". Whitfield's book is described only through a published summary, which could not be re-read on 2026-10-15. Neither book's text could be read here, so this principle rests on a publisher's listing and a summary, not on either book.
How is inner child work different from parts work like Internal Family Systems?
They overlap. Internal Family Systems describes many parts, including young, hurt parts it calls exiles, and works from a calm Self that helps parts unburden; it is covered on its own page. The sources read for this page describe inner child work as centred on one younger part of the adult, and do not describe a general model of many parts. This comparison therefore rests on those sources' descriptions, not on the full text of either book.
Is there any research showing inner child work actually helps?
Very little. No randomised controlled trial of Whitfield's or Bradshaw's methods was found as of October 2026. One small study, Derakhshan, Jafari and Khalilian (The Journal of General Psychology, 2025, doi 10.1080/00221309.2024.2449327), tested an inner child healing course that is not named as either book's method. Its abstract describes 42 women from five psychotherapy centres in Isfahan, Iran, assigned to a six-session course (21) or to no intervention (21), in a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group. The course group reported higher scores on happiness, on freedom and intimacy in family relationships, on trust in the family and on collaborative decision-making with family (p < .01), but not on commitment and responsibility or on fear of COVID-19. The abstract says the women were randomly assigned to the two groups, but the authors label the design quasi-experimental.
Can you do inner child work on your own without a therapist?
The one step this page keeps can be done alone: writing a letter by hand with the non-dominant hand, as the publisher listing of Bradshaw's Homecoming names the technique. The listing does not say what the letter should contain, so this page gives no more than that. Feeling flooded, losing track of where you are, or finding images that will not settle are signs to stop and continue with a trained therapist.
Why does this page leave out affirmations from inner child books?
The publisher's listing of Bradshaw's Homecoming mentions affirmations and guided meditations. This page leaves out affirmation scripts and affirmation-led meditations, because repeating scripted positive statements can feel cut off from reality and can cause harm unless a skilled person guides it. The listing also names an indexes-of-suspicion questionnaire and grief work; this page keeps neither, because no step for either is described in a source read here.
How does reparenting yourself fit with inner child work?
Reparenting is the idea that the adult you are now can give the younger part some of the care and protection it missed. Schema therapy develops this more formally as limited reparenting, in which a therapist first provides that care within set limits; the schema-therapy page covers it. Limited reparenting was not found tested separately. Imagery rescripting, a related technique in which an adult meets a younger self's need in imagery, has been tested in trials: a 2012 review (Arntz) judged its results promising while noting methodological limitations. A 2023 meta-analysis (Kip et al.) of 17 randomised trials with 908 participants reported g = 0.68 (95% CI 0.18 to 1.18; seven trials) compared with passive controls, mostly waitlist, and a non-significant g = -0.01 (95% CI -0.18 to 0.15; eleven trials) compared with (prolonged) exposure, cognitive restructuring and EMDR. A 2025 correction to that paper exists (PubMed 40974760); its text could not be read, so these figures are as the 2023 abstract gives them. That is evidence for imagery rescripting, not for inner child work.
Ce que ces approches ne tranchent pas
The approach in these two books is, as far as the sources read here show, practitioner writing. No randomised controlled trial of either method was found as of October 2026. Neither book's text could be read here. What this page says about Whitfield's book comes from a published summary (Shortform), and no step from that summary is kept, because its body text could not be re-read. What it says about Bradshaw's book comes from its publisher's listing, which names techniques but gives no steps for most of them. A 2025 correction to the Kip et al. 2023 meta-analysis exists; its text could not be read. Childhood material can surface more strongly than expected. Stop if you feel flooded, lose track of where you are, or find images that will not settle, and continue only with a trained therapist. Those signs belong with a trained therapist, not alone.
