Alternate analytical (checking) meditation with placement meditation

Reason your way into a lamrim topic until it is felt, then rest on that understanding without more thinking — and alternate the two.

Pourquoi ça marche

Lamrim rests on a three-step process of hearing a teaching, thinking it over until it is understood and found convincing, and then meditating. Alexander Berzin describes the meditation itself as two-fold: in analytical — he prefers “discerning” — meditation you walk again through the line of reasoning so that the state of mind it leads to arises freshly, and in stabilizing (placement) meditation you let what you have discerned sink in with full concentration, alternating the two until they can be combined. Mipham’s Wheel of Analytical Meditation gives the same rhythm: investigate until the momentum of the insight fades, remain with it, then investigate again. The Tibetan word for meditation, Berzin notes, implies building up a habit — which is why the topic is revisited rather than understood once.

Comment faire

  1. Choose one lamrim topic for the session — for example, the rarity of this human life — and read or recall the short line of reasoning that goes with it.
  2. Analytical phase: go through the reasons one at a time, in your own words and with examples from your own life, until the conclusion is felt rather than just stated.
  3. Placement phase: when it lands, stop reasoning and rest the mind on that felt understanding, as long as it stays clear.
  4. When it fades or the mind wanders, return to the reasoning to refresh it; let the session alternate between the two.
  5. Keep sessions short at first — Berzin suggests a few minutes — and end with a line about what you want to carry into the day.

Données probantes

The hear–think–meditate sequence and the alternation of discerning and stabilizing meditation are from Berzin’s Meditation Advice for Lam-rim Practice; the investigate-then-remain rhythm is in Mipham’s Wheel of Analytical Meditation. Dahl, Lutz and Davidson propose a “constructive” family of meditations working through perspective taking and cognitive reappraisal, which this reflective style resembles, though they did not study lamrim. Support is textual and practitioner-based. (mechanistic)

The cognitive-science framework is a classification, not a test of analytical meditation; no controlled study of lamrim-style analytical meditation was found for this page.

Treating the thinking step as the meditation. Berzin is explicit that pondering a teaching, however useful, is not yet meditation; the point of the analytical phase is to generate the state of mind, and the point of placement is to let it become familiar.
