Pick one thinking bias to catch this week

Choose one thinking bias, such as attribution bias, and watch for it in your own reasoning for a week before choosing another.

Pourquoi ça marche

Lectica’s web page lists de-biasing among its +7 skills and describes “tackling common cognitive biases, one at a time,” naming attribution bias among the examples. The developers’ idea is that naming a bias and watching for it builds the skill of avoiding it. Whether that reduces the bias is not tested in the sources read.

Comment faire

  1. Pick one bias you already know, and write one sentence describing it in your own words.
  2. Each day, notice one judgment about another person or event, and ask whether that bias could explain it.
  3. Write down an alternative explanation, even if you do not believe it.
  4. After a week, decide whether to keep the same bias or move to the next one.

Données probantes

The one-bias-at-a-time method is listed on Lectica’s web page as part of its +7 skills. The page does not cite outcome data for it. (anecdotal)

The method is the developers’ suggestion. Cognitive-bias research in general is a separate body of work, not covered by the sources read here.
