Recollect that the body will die
Bring to mind, calmly, that this body is subject to death — so what matters now comes into focus.
Pourquoi ça marche
The last body exercise in MN 10 compares one’s own body to corpses at different stages of decay in a charnel ground: “this body too is of the same nature.” Anālayo’s guide renders it for contemporary practitioners as a recollection that this breath could be the last. The tradition holds that facing mortality directly cuts through procrastination and grasping and turns attention to what is actually worth doing with the time that remains.
Comment faire
- After settling with the body for a few minutes, bring to mind calmly: “This body is mortal. It will die.”
- Let one breath in be accompanied by the thought that it may be the last; let the out-breath be a letting go.
- Notice what the recollection does — whether it brings urgency, tenderness, fear or clarity — without pushing any of it away.
- Before ending, ask what you would want to do with today in the light of it.
- If you are grieving or the recollection brings up overwhelming fear, set it aside and return to the whole body.
Données probantes
This is a canonical exercise (MN 10) and a standard part of insight training; Anālayo presents the breath-based version as a gentler modern entry point. Its claimed benefits rest on the contemplative tradition and practitioner reports rather than controlled studies. (anecdotal)
Not studied in controlled trials. Recollecting death is not suitable for everyone at every time — during acute grief, after a recent loss, or when death thoughts feel intrusive, set it aside and seek support; if thoughts of death feel like they are pulling you toward harming yourself, contact a crisis line or emergency services.

Erreur fréquente
Using the recollection to generate dread — the traditional aim is a clear, settled urgency about how to live, and if the result is mainly fear the practice is being done too forcefully.

Plus de pratiques pour Satipaṭṭhāna: The Four Foundations of Mindfulness
- Know the body in its postures and activities
Keep a light awareness of whether you are walking, standing, sitting or lying down — and of what you are doing as you do it.
- Scan the body as its anatomical parts
Move attention through skin, flesh and bones to see the body as made of parts rather than as one fixed thing to defend or admire.
- Feel the body as the four elements
Notice hardness, fluidity, temperature and movement in the body as qualities rather than as “me.”
- Notice the feeling tone of each experience
Catch whether a moment feels pleasant, unpleasant or neutral before you react to it.
- Recognise the state of your mind as a state
Know the mind as “with anger,” “distracted,” or “settled” — a weather pattern you can see, not a truth you are inside.
- Watch the hindrances and the factors of awakening come and go
Notice when desire, ill will, dullness, restlessness or doubt is present — and when mindfulness, investigation, energy, joy, calm, concentration and equanimity are.
- Practise all seven contemplations in one sitting
Move through anatomy, elements, mortality, feeling tone, mind, hindrances and awakening factors as one integrated session.
- Know what to do if practice brings up difficulty
Recognise that mindfulness can surface fear, old memories or disorientation — and adjust instead of pushing through.
