Step out of the placement and come back to your body
Leave the constellation, let someone know you need a break, and let your feet and eyes bring you back to the room before you think about your family.
Perché funziona
A constellation places people in roles that stand for your family, and the feelings in that room can feel very real long after the placements end. Stepping out and orienting to the room (the floor, the faces you can see, your breath) gives the body a break from that intensity and reminds you that your present life is separate from the scene. Grounding first lets you notice what you actually feel, rather than being carried by the group's momentum.
Come farlo
- Tell the facilitator, or someone beside you, 'I need to step out for a while.' You do not need to explain more than that.
- Walk to a chair or a wall, put both feet on the floor, and name three things you can see.
- Let your breathing find its own pace; you do not need to slow it, deepen it or hold it.
- Hold a cup of water or a jumper, and notice its weight and temperature.
- When you feel steadier, decide whether to return to the group or leave for the day, and let someone you trust know which.
- Do not look at the placements again until you have rested and talked with someone you trust. Revisit the work only another day, with a trained facilitator, not alone.

Treleaven (2018) and Ogden, Minton and Pain (2006) are clinical texts that describe grounding and staying within a tolerable range of arousal. Siegel (1999) describes that range as a 'window of tolerance', the zone where a person can still think and feel at once. These are clinical texts, not trials of grounding for this specific exercise. (clinical)
No source here tests stepping out of a constellation. Family constellations is itself a contested method, and the page on its evidence describes what its trials can and cannot show. These grounding steps are general practice, not a substitute for a clinician if the crying, grief or guilt continues.

Staying in the placement and trying to finish the 'solution' the group is moving toward while you are sobbing. The movement can wait; the feelings do not need to resolve tonight.

- Reach a person if the sobbing and guilt keep going
If days of sobbing, guilt, or thoughts of not being here follow the workshop, reach a trusted person and a clinician now, not after more constellation work.
- Attend a three-day family constellation seminar
Join a short group seminar in which family relationships are set out and watched, in either the active or the observing role.
- Take the active seat and place your family members
As the active participant, describe your family and the problem to the facilitator, then let the group stand in for your family and place them in the room.
- Stand in as a representative for someone else’s family member
When another participant is the active participant, let yourself be placed as a stand-in for one of their family members and notice what comes up.
- Watch the placements move toward a solution arrangement
After the facilitator’s interventions, watch the stand-ins change places until the group reaches the arrangement the method calls a solution constellation.
