Take turns with a Focusing companion
Trade time with a partner: one person focuses and leads, the other keeps them company by saying back what they hear.
Perché funziona
Cornell teaches Focusing partnership as a way to practise without a therapist. The companion's job is to support the Focuser's own inner relationship, not to interpret or advise. The Focuser stays in charge: they say how long the turn lasts, and they may interrupt or ignore what the companion says. Saying back what the Focuser said, after a pause about as long as a breath, lets the Focuser hear their own words and check them against what they sense.
Come farlo
- Agree on equal turns, how long each turn will be, and who goes first.
- As Focuser, tell your companion how much you want them to say; you are free to interrupt them or ignore what they say.
- As companion, after the Focuser speaks, pause for about a breath and say back what they said in their own words: "You're sensing a tight place in your chest."
- Hold back advice and interpretation, offer a suggestion only if the Focuser asks for one, and switch roles when the turn ends.
Prove scientifiche
Focusing partnership is taught in The Power of Focusing, and the whole Student's and Companion's Manual is built around the Focuser and companion roles. No study of these partnerships was found. Related evidence comes from therapy research: a meta-analysis by Elliott and colleagues (82 samples, 6,138 clients) found therapist empathy to be a moderately strong predictor of outcome (r = .28). (anecdotal)
The empathy meta-analysis studied therapists in therapy, not lay Focusing partners, so it supports the value of being accurately heard only by analogy. A partner is not a therapist: if either person becomes overwhelmed, end the turn and seek professional support.

Errore comune
The companion slipping into helping: interpreting, reassuring, telling a similar story. In Cornell's model the Focuser leads, and the companion's job is to keep them company, not to steer.

Altre pratiche per Inner Relationship Focusing: Being With the Parts of You That Feel
- Say "something in me" instead of "I am"
Change "I am angry" to "I'm sensing something in me that feels angry", so you can be with the feeling instead of being it.
- Say hello to the part that pushes back against a feeling
When a reaction such as impatience or "not this again" rises against a feeling, say hello to that reaction as well, so it is acknowledged rather than pushing the feeling out of view.
- Keep it company with interested curiosity
Check whether it is all right to be with what you feel, then sit with it the way you would sit with a frightened child: no pushing, no fixing.
- Sense how it feels from its point of view
Shift from how the feeling seems to you to how things seem to it: what it feels, and what its mood is.
- Invite what it does not want to happen
Invite a stuck feeling or reaction to let you know what it does not want to happen to you; underneath there is often something it is protecting.
- Be with the inner critic and the part it criticizes
Instead of fighting the critic or collapsing under it, sense both the critic and the part being criticized as something in you, each in its own space.
- Notice when you have merged with a part or are pushing one away
Recognize the two ways of losing Presence — becoming the part, or shutting it out — and come back to being the one who can be with both.
