Sketch where your development is uneven

Draw a rough bar chart of your capacities — thinking, feeling, relating, moral judgment, body — to see where you are strong and where you lag.

Perché funziona

Integral theory holds that development happens along separate lines — cognitive, emotional, interpersonal, moral and others — that can move at different rates in the same person. Esbjörn-Hargens describes the "psychograph", a simple chart of a person’s lines, as the tool for showing this. Seeing the unevenness explains why being capable in one area does not carry over to another, and points to where effort is most needed.

Come farlo

  1. Draw six bars labelled thinking, feeling, relating, moral judgment, body, and one of your choice.
  2. Shade each bar by how well you handle hard situations in that area, using concrete recent examples rather than how you would like to be.
  3. Ask someone who knows you well to shade the same chart for you.
  4. Compare the two. Pick the lowest bar both of you agree on.
  5. Choose one situation this month in which to use a stronger line to support the weaker one — for example, using clear thinking to prepare for a hard emotional conversation.

Prove scientifiche

Wilber describes developmental lines (which he also calls streams) as able to develop at different rates in Integral Psychology (2000) and in his 2003 outline of integral psychology. Esbjörn-Hargens’s overview introduces the psychograph and suggests using stronger lines to support weaker ones. The psychograph is an illustration, not a validated measure. (anecdotal)

The list of lines is not drawn from a single validated instrument, and self-ratings are unreliable — which is why the second rater matters.

Errore comune

Shading by self-image instead of by recent behaviour. Most people rate the line they value most as their strongest.
