Use compassion as the counter to cruelty

Notice the small cruelties in thought — contempt, relish at someone’s failure — and let compassion replace them.

Perché funziona

Compassion’s far enemy, in the Visuddhimagga, is cruelty: its direct opposite, which cannot be present at the same time, since “it is not possible to practice compassion and be cruel to breathing things simultaneously.” The commentary therefore presents compassion as “the way to purity for one who has much cruelty” and, quoting the discourses, as the escape from cruelty. The practical lever is that two incompatible states compete: deliberately arousing concern for a being’s suffering crowds out the satisfaction or contempt that cruelty feeds on.

Come farlo

  1. For one day, watch for the quiet forms of cruelty: a flash of satisfaction when someone fails, mocking commentary in your head, contempt for a stranger.
  2. When you catch one, pause and name it without self-punishment: “there is cruelty.”
  3. Bring to mind what that person may be going through, and form the compassionate wish toward them for one breath.
  4. Notice what happens to the cruel impulse while the wish is present.
  5. At the end of the day, recall which situations reliably triggered it — those are where to practise next.

Prove scientifiche

The far enemy, the incompatibility of compassion and cruelty, and compassion as the purification for a cruel temperament are in Visuddhimagga IX.97–99 and IX.108. The idea that an incompatible state can displace an unwholesome one is a recurring method in the commentaries. Support is textual and practitioner-based; there is no direct study of this exercise. (anecdotal)

Not studied in controlled research. Catching cruelty in yourself can easily become a new occasion for harsh self-judgment, which is itself a turn of cruelty inward.

Errore comune

Hunting for cruelty in yourself with contempt — the practice is to meet the cruel impulse with compassion, including for the part of you that had it, not to add a second cruelty on top of the first.
