Begin where the lamrim begins: relying on a spiritual teacher, with care

Treat finding and learning from a qualified teacher as the root of the path — and take the time the texts themselves ask for to choose well.

Perché funziona

Tsongkhapa’s Foundation of All Qualities opens by calling the kind teacher the foundation of all good qualities and right reliance on them the root of the path, and the publisher’s description of the Great Treatise has the Dalai Lama’s endorsement there describes it as running from how to rely on a spiritual teacher up to buddhahood. Berzin notes that the Gelug lamrims place the healthy teacher relationship before the stages themselves, and that the more advanced instructions on regarding the teacher as a buddha are not meant for beginners. Atiśa’s Lamp already names qualities to look for in a teacher who gives vows — skill, living by the vows, patience and compassion. The point is practical: the stages are oral instructions that are explained, corrected and fitted to a person.

Come farlo

  1. Read or listen to lamrim teachings from more than one qualified teacher before committing to one.
  2. Notice whether a teacher’s conduct matches what they teach, and whether they show the patience and compassion the Lamp lists.
  3. Join a lamrim class or study group if you can, so the reflections are explained and questions get answered.
  4. Bring your actual questions and difficulties to the teacher rather than only the topics you feel good about.
  5. Leave the advanced devotional instructions for when you know a teacher well, as Berzin advises; the trust the tradition asks for is meant to be well founded.

Prove scientifiche

The opening of Tsongkhapa’s Foundation of All Qualities, the publisher’s description of the Great Treatise, verse 23 of Atiśa’s Lamp, and Berzin’s two Study Buddhism teachings on lamrim structure and meditation. Support is the tradition’s own account. (anecdotal)

Traditions differ on how much devotion is asked for and when. The texts assume a qualified teacher; if a teacher or group asks for things that harm you or others, that is a reason to step back and seek other advice.

Errore comune

Either skipping the teacher entirely and treating the lamrim as a reading list, or handing over judgment all at once. The texts put the relationship first precisely so that it is examined and built, not assumed.
