Learn what tummo is: the inner heat of the Six Yogas of Nāropa

Understand tummo as its own texts describe it — the first of Nāropa’s six yogas, with three kinds of inner heat and an aim beyond warmth.

Perché funziona

Patrul Rinpoche’s short synopsis gives the whole frame in a few lines. Inner heat, “the root of the path,” is threefold. The inner heat of practice has three key points: the posture for the body, gentle and forceful breathing for the winds, and the visualisation for the mind. The inner heat of experience unfolds “as the elements converge,” through times of warmth or pain, of bliss, and of freedom from discursive thought, with ten signs. The supreme inner heat comes when the knots of the central channel are untied and the supreme accomplishment of Mahāmudrā is attained. Knowing this frame changes what you are looking for: in the tradition, heat is a sign and a means within a path of awakening, not the goal.

Come farlo

  1. Read Patrul Rinpoche’s Synopsis of the Six Dharmas of the Perfection Stage (it is a page long) and note where inner heat sits among the six.
  2. Notice the three levels he names — practice, experience, supreme — and that the last is described as Mahāmudrā realisation, not as body temperature.
  3. Read Tsenshap Serkong Rinpoche’s introduction to the Six Yogas to see where they sit: completion-stage practices of the mother tantras of highest yoga tantra.
  4. Learn the lineage names you will meet — Tilopa, Nāropa, Marpa, Milarepa, Gampopa, Tsongkhapa — so you can recognise which tradition a teaching comes from.
  5. Treat what you read as orientation. The texts themselves say the instructions cannot be understood from the written words alone.

The threefold division and its key points are stated in Patrul Rinpoche’s synopsis, translated on Lotsawa House. The Study Buddhism glossary defines tummo as an advanced practice on the complete stage of anuttarayoga tantra in which heat is generated at the navel chakra. Serkong Rinpoche’s teaching places the six yogas among the completion-stage practices of the mother tantras and traces the lineage from Tilopa and Nāropa through Marpa and Milarepa; he calls Tsongkhapa’s Possessing the Three Confidences a great text on the subject. Detailed instruction manuals were also written within the lineage — Marta Sernesi studies a fifteenth-century blockprint manual on the Six Yogas of 168 folios, illustrated in its margins. (anecdotal)

Lists of the six differ between lineages and authors, and Patrul’s synopsis is a summary, not an instruction. These are statements of the tradition’s own understanding, not tested claims.

Thinking of tummo as a breathing hack for staying warm. In Patrul Rinpoche’s account the breathing is one of three key points of the first level, and the point of the whole practice is the realisation he calls Mahāmudrā.
