徳のある中庸に向けて熟考する

どんな性格上の選択についても、不足の極端と過剰の極端を特定し、その間を目指す。

Why it works

アリストテレスの中庸の教義は「平均的であれ」ではなく「この状況に合う応答を見つけよ」ということだ。それぞれの徳は不足と過剰の間にある(勇気は臆病と無謀の間、正直さは不誠実さと無慈悲な無遠慮さの間)。両極を名づけることは、より良い応答の空間を可視化し、徳のある極端を安全なデフォルトとして扱うというよくある誤りを防ぐ。

How to do it

  1. 状況で問われている徳を名づける(例:寛大さ、主張性、忍耐)。
  2. 不足の極(「少なすぎる」)と過剰の極(「多すぎる」)を書く。
  3. 問う——この人たちとこの文脈を踏まえて、現在の状況はこの軸のどこでの行動を求めているか?
  4. その行動にコミットし、後で自分がその状況をうまく読み取れたかどうかを振り返る。

The doctrine of the mean is a philosophical framework rather than an empirically studied intervention; some personality and emotion-regulation research supports moderation of extreme responses as adaptive. Aldao and colleagues’ meta-analytic review across psychopathology finds that habitually extreme regulation strategies (rumination, suppression, avoidance) predict worse outcomes than more flexible, context-fitted responses — an empirical echo of aiming between the deficient and excessive poles. No RCT tests "training the Aristotelian mean" directly; the framework’s value is as a structured deliberative tool, not a scientifically validated treatment.
