Understand divine pride and pure appearance as technical terms

Divine pride and pure appearance are precise terms in the tradition, and knowing what they mean stops them sounding like self-inflation.

なぜ効果があるのか

Study Buddhism’s glossary defines pride of the deity as considering oneself, on the basis of labelling the conventional “me”, in the form of the buddha-figure one is visualising oneself as. It defines pure appearance as an appearance of things in the form of a buddha-figure or mandala, as an enlightened mind makes them appear and free of the four extremes of impossible existence. Read this way, divine pride is a deliberate reconception of identity inside the view of emptiness, and not an ordinary sense of superiority.

やり方

  1. Read the Study Buddhism glossary entries for pride of the deity and pure appearance, and then the emptiness page on this site.
  2. Write down, in your own words, the difference between an ordinary sense of self and the conventional “me” that the glossary describes as the base for the label.
  3. List any passages in your reading where the terms seem to mean self-importance, and mark them to raise with a teacher.

エビデンス

These are definitions from the tradition’s glossary, not outcome data. They explain the terms and do not measure any effect of holding them. (mechanistic)

The glossary definitions are short. Teachers explain these terms at length, and a teacher is the right person to say how they apply.

出典

よくある間違い

Hearing divine pride as permission for self-importance. The glossary definition describes a conventional label held within a view of emptiness, and it does not describe pride in the ordinary sense.
