Take the active seat and place your family members
As the active participant, describe your family and the problem to the facilitator, then let the group stand in for your family and place them in the room.
なぜ効果があるのか
Stiefel and colleagues describe the process as the client’s “physical-emotional positioning and re-positioning of substitute family members in relation to each other, with help of a therapeutic group” (2002). Cápec et al. (2022) state that representatives act on their “subconscious impulses” and depict family behaviour “with reliable accuracy.” Those are the method’s own claims; none of the trials read for this page tested them, and the trials tested the seminar as a whole.
やり方
- Take the active participant role when you join the seminar (Weinhold et al., 2013).
- With the facilitator’s help, describe the essential facts about your family and your problem (Cápec et al., 2022, section “Family constellation seminars as a candidate method”, paragraph 1).
- Ask other participants to act as representatives (“stand-ins”) for you and your family members, and place them in the room according to your own image of the situation (Cápec et al., 2022, same paragraph).
- Let the placements be re-positioned as the work goes on, since the process is described as one of re-positioning (Stiefel et al., 2002).
エビデンス
The active role is part of the seminar tested in the randomised trials, in which the active participants made up most of the seminar group (Weinhold et al., 2013). The steps above are described in Cápec et al. (2022) and Stiefel et al. (2002), and no trial tested them as separate steps. (clinical)
The trials tested the seminar, not this step on its own, so this is evidence for the seminar, not for the placement step. The sources describe the placement as the active participant’s own image; they do not describe any check of whether a placement matches real relationships. Placing family members can bring up overwhelming material, so this is done with a trained facilitator, never alone. Stop signs: feeling flooded, losing track of where you are, or images that will not settle. Step out of the group and take that to a trained therapist. The description in Cápec et al. (2022) comes from a paper about people with chronic itch.

よくある間違い
Reading a placement as a verdict on the real people in your family. The trials did not test whether placements match real relationships, and Talarczyk (2011) argues the method does not meet several rules of the Polish code of ethics for psychotherapists. A placement shows what the group shows in that moment; it is not proof about your family.

- Step out of the placement and come back to your body
Leave the constellation, let someone know you need a break, and let your feet and eyes bring you back to the room before you think about your family.
- Reach a person if the sobbing and guilt keep going
If days of sobbing, guilt, or thoughts of not being here follow the workshop, reach a trusted person and a clinician now, not after more constellation work.
- Attend a three-day family constellation seminar
Join a short group seminar in which family relationships are set out and watched, in either the active or the observing role.
- Stand in as a representative for someone else’s family member
When another participant is the active participant, let yourself be placed as a stand-in for one of their family members and notice what comes up.
- Watch the placements move toward a solution arrangement
After the facilitator’s interventions, watch the stand-ins change places until the group reaches the arrangement the method calls a solution constellation.
