Choose between carrots and sticks based on your goal type

Sticks (loss-framed penalties) work better for stopping behaviors; carrots (rewards) work better for starting new ones.

Why it works

Approach and avoidance motivation are governed by partly distinct neural systems. Loss-framed consequences activate avoidance motivation, which is well-matched to stopping unwanted behaviors. Reward-based incentives activate approach motivation, which is better matched to initiating new positive behaviors. Mismatching the incentive type to the goal type reduces effectiveness.

How to do it

  1. Identify whether your target is stopping/reducing something (use a penalty) or starting/increasing something (use a reward).
  2. For stopping: define an immediate cost per instance of the unwanted behavior.
  3. For starting: define a reward that is delivered only upon completing the target behavior — not for effort, for completion.
  4. Keep the incentive tied to behavior, not to outcomes, to maintain control over what you’re rewarding.

Evidence

Behavioral economics experiments comparing loss-framed and gain-framed incentives for health behaviors (smoking cessation, exercise) find loss framing is equal to or more effective than gains, especially for stopping behaviors. Effect sizes are modest. (rct)

Financial incentives can crowd out intrinsic motivation if poorly designed — once removed, behavior can drop below its original level. The goal is to bridge to a stable habit, not to make the incentive permanent.
