The Major System: Encode Numbers as Words

What is the major system, and how do you use it to memorize numbers?

The Major System is a phonetic mnemonic that assigns consonant sounds to digits 0–9, letting you convert any number into a pronounceable word or phrase. Those words are far easier to remember than raw digits because the brain handles language and imagery dramatically better than abstract numerals. The system is well established among memory practitioners, though formal RCT evidence is limited.

Humans are terrible at remembering strings of digits and excellent at remembering stories, faces, and places. The Major System bridges that gap by converting numbers into consonants, consonants into words, and words into images — which can then be placed in a memory palace or linked in a story. The system dates at least to the 17th century and has been refined and used by memory champions ever since. Below are the core practices that make it work, with honest evidence ratings.

Practices

Learn the 10-consonant phonetic code

Memorize which consonant sound maps to each digit 0–9 before doing anything else.

Convert any number to a word or phrase

Translate a digit string into consonants, then find a word whose consonants match.

Extend to the Person-Action-Object (PAO) system

Assign a person, an action, and an object to each two-digit number to compress large sequences.

Anchor Major System words in a memory palace

Place each Major System word-image at a locus to make long numbers retrievable in sequence.

Practice with real number targets — phone numbers, dates, facts

Apply the system immediately to actual numbers you need, not abstract drills.

Review and maintain encoded numbers before they fade

Walk your number encodings at 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month to keep them durable.
