Combine TIPP components into a crisis sequence

For very high arousal, run TIPP as a full sequence — temperature first, then exercise, then breathing, then relaxation.

Why it works

Each TIPP component targets a different aspect of the physiological stress response. Combining them in sequence produces a multi-pathway reduction that is more effective than any single component because they address different timescales: temperature produces an immediate reflex-level effect, exercise discharges mobilized energy, breathing resets the cardiac rhythm, and relaxation clears residual muscular tension. The sequence moves from fastest-acting to most thorough.

How to do it

  1. Start with temperature if arousal is at crisis level (8–10/10) — this produces the fastest drop.
  2. Move to two to three minutes of intense exercise to burn through sympathetic activation.
  3. Follow with five minutes of paced breathing to reset cardiac rhythm.
  4. Close with a brief PMR scan to clear remaining muscular tension.
  5. Re-rate your arousal and assess whether cognitive skills are now accessible.

Evidence

The rationale for sequencing physiological crisis interventions from fastest to most thorough is mechanistic; each step addresses a distinct physiological pathway, and the combined effect is additive. The full TIPP sequence is established DBT clinical practice. (clinical)

The specific additive benefit of the full sequence over individual components has not been isolated in trial designs; the combination is clinical practice recommendation.

Common mistake

Trying to start with paced breathing when arousal is at crisis level — breathing requires enough voluntary regulation to maintain the count, which may not be available at extreme intensities; temperature is more appropriate first.

Practice this with IX Coach

IX Coach helps you identify your current arousal level and selects the appropriate starting point in the TIPP sequence — crisis level gets temperature first; moderate arousal can start with breathing or relaxation.
