Stand in as a representative for someone else’s family member
When another participant is the active participant, let yourself be placed as a stand-in for one of their family members and notice what comes up.
Por que funciona
In the method, representatives are placed in the room according to the active participant’s internal image, and Zhong et al. (2026) report that representatives “frequently describe embodied sensations, emotions, or impulses.” Cápec et al. (2022) describe representatives as acting on “subconscious impulses.” Whether those reports reflect the family member they stand for is the method’s own claim and was not tested in any trial read for this page.
Como fazer
- Be chosen by the active participant to represent a family member or a key figure from their family (Zhong et al., 2026, section “Core principles and operational procedures of FCT”, paragraph 1; Cápec et al., 2022, section “Family constellation seminars as a candidate method”, paragraph 1).
- Stand where you are placed in the room, since the active participant positions representatives according to their own image of the situation (Cápec et al., 2022, same paragraph).
- Notice any embodied sensations, emotions or impulses that arise, which representatives are described as frequently reporting (Zhong et al., 2026, same section, paragraph 1).
- Work under the facilitator’s supervision, since the facilitator makes interpretations of the active participant’s and representatives’ reactions (Cápec et al., 2022, same paragraph).
Evidência
The representative role is described in two peer-reviewed papers (Cápec et al., 2022; Zhong et al., 2026). It is part of the seminar tested in the randomised trials, but no trial tested the representative role on its own. (clinical)
The trials tested the whole seminar, not the representative role. Zhong et al. (2026) are a critical appraisal, and the Cápec et al. (2022) description comes from a paper about chronic itch, so neither is a neutral account of the method. Standing in for someone else’s family member can bring up overwhelming material, so this is done with a trained facilitator, never alone. Stop signs: feeling flooded, losing track of where you are, or images that will not settle. Step out and take that to a trained therapist.

Erro comum
Taking on the feelings or the verdict of the family member you stand for as if they were your own. The sources describe representatives reporting sensations and impulses; they do not show that those reports identify what the real family member feels.

Mais práticas para Family Constellations: The Method, the Trial Evidence, and Its Limits
- Step out of the placement and come back to your body
Leave the constellation, let someone know you need a break, and let your feet and eyes bring you back to the room before you think about your family.
- Reach a person if the sobbing and guilt keep going
If days of sobbing, guilt, or thoughts of not being here follow the workshop, reach a trusted person and a clinician now, not after more constellation work.
- Attend a three-day family constellation seminar
Join a short group seminar in which family relationships are set out and watched, in either the active or the observing role.
- Take the active seat and place your family members
As the active participant, describe your family and the problem to the facilitator, then let the group stand in for your family and place them in the room.
- Watch the placements move toward a solution arrangement
After the facilitator’s interventions, watch the stand-ins change places until the group reaches the arrangement the method calls a solution constellation.
