Alternate analytical (checking) meditation with placement meditation
Reason your way into a lamrim topic until it is felt, then rest on that understanding without more thinking — and alternate the two.
Por que funciona
Lamrim rests on a three-step process of hearing a teaching, thinking it over until it is understood and found convincing, and then meditating. Alexander Berzin describes the meditation itself as two-fold: in analytical — he prefers “discerning” — meditation you walk again through the line of reasoning so that the state of mind it leads to arises freshly, and in stabilizing (placement) meditation you let what you have discerned sink in with full concentration, alternating the two until they can be combined. Mipham’s Wheel of Analytical Meditation gives the same rhythm: investigate until the momentum of the insight fades, remain with it, then investigate again. The Tibetan word for meditation, Berzin notes, implies building up a habit — which is why the topic is revisited rather than understood once.
Como fazer
- Choose one lamrim topic for the session — for example, the rarity of this human life — and read or recall the short line of reasoning that goes with it.
- Analytical phase: go through the reasons one at a time, in your own words and with examples from your own life, until the conclusion is felt rather than just stated.
- Placement phase: when it lands, stop reasoning and rest the mind on that felt understanding, as long as it stays clear.
- When it fades or the mind wanders, return to the reasoning to refresh it; let the session alternate between the two.
- Keep sessions short at first — Berzin suggests a few minutes — and end with a line about what you want to carry into the day.
Evidência
The hear–think–meditate sequence and the alternation of discerning and stabilizing meditation are from Berzin’s Meditation Advice for Lam-rim Practice; the investigate-then-remain rhythm is in Mipham’s Wheel of Analytical Meditation. Dahl, Lutz and Davidson propose a “constructive” family of meditations working through perspective taking and cognitive reappraisal, which this reflective style resembles, though they did not study lamrim. Support is textual and practitioner-based. (mechanistic)
The cognitive-science framework is a classification, not a test of analytical meditation; no controlled study of lamrim-style analytical meditation was found for this page.

Erro comum
Treating the thinking step as the meditation. Berzin is explicit that pondering a teaching, however useful, is not yet meditation; the point of the analytical phase is to generate the state of mind, and the point of placement is to let it become familiar.

- Begin where the lamrim begins: relying on a spiritual teacher, with care
Treat finding and learning from a qualified teacher as the root of the path — and take the time the texts themselves ask for to choose well.
- Contemplate the precious human life: the freedoms and advantages
Go through the conditions that make this life an opportunity — what you are free from and what you have — until you feel how rare and useful it is.
- Contemplate death and impermanence with the nine-point reflection
Reflect that death is certain, that its time is uncertain, and that at death only what you have cultivated helps — so that you stop postponing what matters.
- Reflect on karma: cause and effect in your own actions
Trace one recent action from its intention to its effects on others and on your own habits, and decide what you want to repeat and what to stop.
- Cultivate renunciation in the tradition’s sense: the determination to be free
See clearly that the pleasures of cyclic existence never finally satisfy, and let that turn into a wish for freedom — not into contempt for life.
- Reflect on the four thoughts that turn the mind (the outer preliminaries)
Precious human birth, impermanence, karma and the suffering of saṃsāra, recited and reflected on together so the mind turns toward practice.
- Set your motivation with the three scopes
Before a session, check honestly which scope you are practising from — this life, a good future, liberation, or awakening for all — and let it widen one step.
- Keep a daily lamrim rhythm: one topic in depth, the whole path at a glance
Work through the outline one topic at a time over weeks, while briefly reviewing the whole path each day so no stage is lost.
