Don’t turn emptiness into a new thing: the emptiness of emptiness

When “everything is empty” starts to feel like a hidden void behind the world, apply the same search to emptiness itself.

Por que funciona

Garfield argues that if emptiness were itself non-empty it would become a substantial reality standing behind appearances, and ordinary things would be demoted to illusion — nihilism about the world paired with reification of emptiness. Analyse the emptiness of a table, he writes, and you find nothing but the table’s lack of inherent existence: no table, no emptiness of the table. Nāgārjuna warns in MMK 24:11 that misperceiving emptiness harms like a snake seized wrongly, an image that echoes the Buddha’s cobra simile in MN 22 about grasping teachings by the wrong end; the same discourse calls the teaching a raft, for crossing over, not for holding on.

Como fazer

  1. Notice when you are using “empty” to mean “unreal,” “meaningless,” or a void that is somehow more real than the world.
  2. Take the object in front of you and ask: where is its emptiness? Look for it as you looked for the object.
  3. Notice that you find only this object, lacking a fixed essence — its emptiness is not somewhere else.
  4. Let “emptiness” itself be one more useful label, a raft for crossing rather than a thing to hold.
  5. Come back to the ordinary room and its objects as the place where emptiness is, not a surface over it.

Evidência

The doctrine of the emptiness of emptiness is drawn from MMK 24:18 in Garfield’s 1994 essay, which he calls the deepest step of the Madhyamaka dialectic and the one that keeps it from metaphysical extravagance. The snake warning is MMK 24:11; the cobra and raft similes are in MN 22; the two extremes of “all exists” and “all does not exist” are named in SN 12.15. Support is textual and philosophical. (anecdotal)

This is the most demanding point in Madhyamaka, and interpreters disagree about it; the practice follows Garfield’s reading, which is influential but not the only one.

Erro comum

Treating emptiness as the “true reality” and the world as an illusion laid over it. That is the reified emptiness Nāgārjuna rejects, and it quietly turns a teaching about freedom from fixed views into one more fixed view.
