Separate the well-mapped steps from the speculative ones

When you read about person perspectives, sort each claim by what kind of evidence stands behind it.

Por que funciona

The person-perspective sequence stitches together two very different bodies of work. The childhood steps — understanding false beliefs, seeing yourself through another’s eyes, taking a bystander’s view — are supported by large research literatures. The adult steps beyond the third person come from sentence-completion scoring developed and validated mostly by the models’ own authors. Knowing which is which keeps a useful map from being mistaken for settled science.

Como fazer

  1. Take one claim you have read about first-, second-, third-, fourth- or fifth-person perspective.
  2. Ask: is this about children or adults? Who studied it, how many people, and were they independent of the model?
  3. Mark it "well established", "early research", or "theory" — and keep using it at that level of confidence.
  4. Notice whether the claims that feel most meaningful to you are also the least tested.

Evidência

A meta-analysis of 178 studies (Wellman, Cross & Watson, 2001) found that false-belief understanding follows a consistent developmental pattern across countries and task variations, with preschoolers moving from below-chance to above-chance performance. Summaries of Selman’s levels place second-person (self-reflective) perspective taking at roughly ages 7–12 and third-person, mutual perspective taking at roughly 10–15, and describe late adolescence as adding perspectives beyond the immediate interaction, such as social norms. By contrast, the STAGES validation study states it is the first scientific study of its scoring system and the only research to date on the three latest stages, using a non-representative participant pool. (observational)

Ages in Selman’s levels are approximate and overlap; they describe typical sequences, not deadlines. The adult research is not worthless — it is early, and mostly not yet independently replicated.

Erro comum

Letting the well-established childhood research lend its credibility to the later adult claims, as if one proved the other.
