Help two conflicting subpersonalities cooperate
From the observer's seat, let two opposed parts each state their need, then work out a shared arrangement.
Por que funciona
Vargiu describes five phases of subpersonality work: recognition, acceptance, coordination, integration and synthesis. Integration is the phase where parts stop fighting and start sharing: through time-sharing (each gets its turn), cooperation, or eventually a fusion of opposites. It works from the stance of an objective observer who takes neither side. The third chair is a practice Vargiu attributes to Gestalt therapists: a Top Dog and an Under Dog each sit in a chair, and an observer's chair is added once the dialogue has gone back and forth. Vargiu treats such arrangements as temporary steps toward deeper coordination, not final settlements.
Como fazer
- Name the two parts in conflict (the one who wants to work late and the one who wants to rest).
- Let each side state what it wants from the other, keeping in touch with the feelings involved, and ask each what it needs, not only what it wants.
- Step back into the position of an objective observer. A third chair can mark that position: sit in it and look at both needs together.
- Look for an arrangement both could accept, such as time-sharing, in which each part expresses itself part of the time.
- Treat the arrangement as temporary and check back on it. Vargiu describes such compromises as steps toward further coordination.
Evidência
The five phases, the observer stance and time-sharing are described in Vargiu's chapter on subpersonalities in Synthesis, Vol. I (1974). Assagioli's manual sets the aim: to synthesize subpersonalities into a larger whole without repressing any useful trait. The phases are a practitioner model; they have not been tested in controlled research. (anecdotal)
This is a clinical map rather than a tested sequence, and real parts rarely move through it in order. When the conflict involves intense fear or old hurt, the negotiation is better done with a trained therapist.

Erro comum
Negotiating while still inside one of the parts. If one side is quietly winning the argument, you have not yet stepped back; return to the observer position before proposing anything.

- Put the parts work down and come back to your body
Set the subpersonality work aside, feel your feet and breath, and let the observing part of you return before any part is asked anything else.
- Reach a person now when a part says you would be better off not here
A part that says you would be better off not here is a reason to call or text a person now, not a voice to bargain with alone.
- Say "there is in me a part that…" instead of "I am…"
When one part of you takes over, name it as something in you rather than all of you.
- Recognize your subpersonalities through the roles you play
Describe how you think, feel and behave in each of your main roles, and notice how different those people are.
- Let a subpersonality appear as an image, then name it
Pick one trait or motive, close your eyes, let an image of it arise on its own, then talk with it and give it a name.
- Accept a subpersonality before you try to change it
Find the part of you that is rejecting another part, step back from both, and let the rejected one be there as it is.
- Find what a subpersonality needs, not just what it wants
Look past a part's demands to the need underneath, then look for an acceptable way to meet that need.
- Train your will with small tasks that have no other purpose
Choose one small, ordinary task you would rather not do, and do it the same way each day for about a week.
