Mindfulness: the factor that is useful at every time

Know whether mindfulness is present or absent right now — the one factor the discourses say never needs to be held back.

Por que funciona

In the “Fire” discourse (SN 46.53) every other factor is right for some states of mind and wrong for others, but mindfulness is “always useful.” It is the factor that notices which state the mind is in, so it is what makes every other adjustment possible. The Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta (MN 10) asks the meditator to know when the mindfulness factor is present and when it is absent, and to understand how it comes to arise; the Ethics discourse (SN 46.3) describes it arising as a person recollects and thinks over a teaching they have heard. Mindfulness here is less a technique than the presence of a recollecting, noticing quality that the rest of the list depends on.

Como fazer

  1. At the start of a sitting, ask once: is mindfulness present right now, or am I absorbed in something?
  2. Whenever you notice you have drifted, register that noticing as the factor arising — without commentary on the drift.
  3. Once a day, outside formal practice, recollect one teaching or line you find meaningful and turn it over for a minute; notice whether the noticing quality comes with it.
  4. At the end of the sitting, note roughly how often mindfulness was present and what seemed to bring it back.

Evidência

The “always useful” line is the closing sentence of SN 46.53; the instruction to know the factor as present or absent is in the dhamma section of MN 10; and the link between recollecting a teaching and the arising of mindfulness is in SN 46.3. The support is textual and practitioner-based; mindfulness programs have their own trial literature, but the awakening-factor framing has not been studied as such. (anecdotal)

Textual support only for this framing. SN 46.51 says only that there are “things that are grounds for” the mindfulness factor without listing them, so any specific list is a later or interpretive addition.

Erro comum

Treating mindfulness as the goal and the other six as optional extras — in the discourses it is the factor that reads the mind’s state so the right other factor can be supported, not a substitute for them.
