Test the sense that you are right

Treat a strong feeling of being right as a claim to check, and name in advance what would show you were wrong.

Por que funciona

The second trap, as a Cultivating Leadership book page lists it, is “our sense that we are right”. The practice treats that sense as a claim to be checked. This page’s inference, not the book’s: a confident sense of being right can end the search for other evidence before anyone has looked for it.

Como fazer

  1. Notice the moment you feel sure, and write the belief in one sentence.
  2. Name one observation that would make you change your mind.
  3. Look for that observation before you act, or ask someone else to look for it.
  4. If you find it, revise the belief and say that you have.

Evidência

The trap is named on a Cultivating Leadership book page for Unlocking Leadership Mindtraps (Garvey Berger, 2020). The checking exercise and its effect are this page’s inferences. No outcome study of this exercise was found. (anecdotal)

Doubting everything equally stops decisions. The practice is for the beliefs you are about to act on, not for every belief you hold.

Erro comum

Writing the disconfirming observation so vaguely that nothing could count as evidence against you.
