Know what comes first: preliminaries, empowerment and the generation stage

Tummo is the far end of a long path — learn the preliminaries it rests on, and begin the parts that are openly taught.

Por que funciona

Tsenshap Serkong Rinpoche states the traditional requirement plainly: the six yogas are taught only to those who have mastered the graded-path (lam-rim) practices — especially renunciation, bodhicitta and a correct understanding of voidness — and who have received an empowerment into a mother tantra, keep the bodhisattva and tantric vows, and are proficient in the generation stage. He calls Vajrasattva purification and guru yoga the two most essential uncommon preliminaries, and in the tummo section the preliminary exercises are done while visualising oneself as the meditation deity — which presupposes the generation stage. The sequence is the mechanism: each stage supplies the motivation, view and concentration the next one needs, and without them, Serkong Rinpoche says, progress is not possible and the practice can even be dangerous.

Como fazer

  1. Start where the tradition starts: the outer preliminaries, the four contemplations that turn the mind away from saṃsāra, which are openly taught.
  2. Learn what the inner preliminaries are — refuge, bodhicitta, maṇḍala offering, Vajrasattva purification and guru yoga — and ask a teacher for their transmission rather than improvising them.
  3. Study a graded-path (lam-rim) text with a teacher, since this is what the six yogas are said to rest on.
  4. Understand that an empowerment brings vows and commitments; find out what they are before you request one.
  5. Expect the generation stage — deity yoga — to come before any completion-stage practice such as tummo, and expect it to take time.

Evidência

The prerequisites — lam-rim realisations, empowerment into a mother tantra, bodhisattva and tantric vows, and generation-stage proficiency — are stated in Serkong Rinpoche’s introduction to his Six Yogas teaching. In the second part he cites Tsongkhapa: without refuge and bodhicitta there is no possibility of successful progress in these tantric practices. The third part names Vajrasattva and guru yoga as the most essential uncommon preliminaries, and the sixth part describes the tummo exercises being done while visualising oneself as a Buddha-figure. Lotsawa House’s collection of ngöndro texts shows the same structure across Nyingma cycles: the four contemplations, then refuge, bodhicitta, maṇḍala, Vajrasattva and guru yoga. (anecdotal)

The exact preliminaries, empowerments and timing differ between Kagyu, Gelug and other lineages and between teachers; Serkong Rinpoche teaches from Tsongkhapa’s commentary. This page describes the sequence and does not give the uncommon preliminaries or the tummo exercises themselves.

Erro comum

Skipping straight to the heat practice because the preliminaries look like religious formality. In the tradition’s own account, the preliminaries are what make the practice work at all, and Serkong Rinpoche warns that without them it is easy to “fall flat on your face.”
