Ask each quadrant its own truth question
Check a claim with the test that fits its quadrant: is it sincere, is it true, is it fair and shared, does it fit the system?
Warum es wirkt
Wilber pairs each quadrant with a different kind of validity: truthfulness or sincerity for inner experience, propositional truth for observable facts, justness or mutual understanding for shared culture, and functional fit for systems. Three of these draw on Habermas’s validity claims of truth, normative rightness and truthfulness. Many arguments stall because people test a claim from one quadrant with another quadrant’s standard — asking for data to prove a feeling, or treating a sincere feeling as proof of a fact.
So gehst du vor
- Write down the key claims in a disagreement or decision, one per line.
- Tag each claim: is it about someone’s inner experience (I), an observable fact (It), what is fair or shared (We), or how a system works (Its)?
- Apply the matching test: I — is this an honest report? It — what would show it is true or false? We — would the people affected agree this is fair? Its — does this fit how the whole system actually runs?
- Notice any claim you were testing with the wrong question, and restate it.
Evidenz
Wilber sets out a validity claim for each quadrant in Sex, Ecology, Spirituality (1995) and A Brief History of Everything (1996). Habermas’s Theory of Communicative Action (Vol. 1, English 1984) is the source of the claims of truth, rightness and truthfulness that Wilber builds on. The practice of matching test to claim is an application, and there is no outcome research on it. (mechanistic)
Critics, including writers sympathetic to integral theory, argue that truth, truthfulness, justness and functional fit are not obviously four kinds of the same thing, and that the mapping onto Habermas is Wilber’s adaptation rather than Habermas’s own scheme.

Häufiger Fehler
Using the scheme to win the argument by declaring the other person’s claim "only" subjective. Each test is valid in its own domain; the point is to stop applying the wrong one, not to rank them.

- Run a stuck problem through all four quadrants

- Separate the culture problem from the systems problem

- Design a habit change with a lever in every quadrant
Back one behavior change with an inner reason, a body-level routine, a supportive relationship and a changed environment.
- Map a conflict one quadrant at a time
Lay out what each side feels, does, believes as a group, and is constrained by, before trying to resolve anything.
- Map a sustainability or community issue the integral ecology way
Look at an environmental or community issue as experience, behavior, culture and systems — and as seen by different people.
- Predict the ripple of a change across the other quadrants
Before you make a change in one quadrant, predict what it will do in the other three, then check.
