Design a habit change with a lever in every quadrant

Back one behavior change with an inner reason, a body-level routine, a supportive relationship and a changed environment.

Warum es wirkt

A habit plan built only from intention (I) or only from tracking (It) leaves the social and structural forces untouched, and those often decide whether the behavior survives a hard week. Putting one deliberate lever in each quadrant means a lapse in one area is less likely to collapse the whole change. Behavior-change research outside integral theory makes a related point: the Behaviour Change Wheel treats capability, physical and social opportunity, and motivation as separate sources of behavior that an intervention should diagnose.

So gehst du vor

  1. Pick one behavior to start or stop.
  2. I: write the reason it matters to you, in your own words, and what you usually tell yourself when you skip it.
  3. It: set the smallest physical routine — time, place, first action — and track it.
  4. We: tell one person and agree how they will support it, or join a group already doing it.
  5. Its: change one thing in your environment or schedule that makes the behavior easier or the old one harder.
  6. Review weekly and strengthen the quadrant that failed most recently.

Evidenz

Integral Life Practice (Wilber, Patten, Leonard & Morelli, 2008) applies the AQAL framework to building a personal practice and stresses training across several areas at once; the quadrant-by-quadrant habit plan here is an application of the map to one behavior, not a protocol from that book. Separately, Michie, van Stralen and West (2011) synthesized 19 behavior-change frameworks into the Behaviour Change Wheel, whose COM-B model distinguishes capability, physical and social opportunity, and motivation. That supports looking beyond individual motivation; it does not test the four quadrants. (mechanistic)

The COM-B categories and the four quadrants overlap but are not the same model, and neither has been compared with the other in a trial.

Adding four levers at once and abandoning all of them when one slips. Start with the quadrant you usually neglect and add the others one at a time.
