Let a pleasant sensation grow into the first jhāna

From access concentration, rest attention on a pleasant feeling and allow it — without forcing — to build into rapture and happiness.

Warum es wirkt

The discourses describe the first jhāna as having “the rapture and bliss born of seclusion, while placing the mind and keeping it connected” (AN 5.28): vitakka and vicāra are the work of placing and holding attention, pīti an energetic rapture, sukha a quieter happiness, and ekaggatā the mind’s unification. Brasington’s manual teaches that once access concentration is established, attention can shift from the breath to a pleasant physical sensation and simply stay there, letting the pleasant quality build until rapture arises on its own. A single-subject case study found activity in the brain’s reward system during the reported joy of jhāna, consistent with — though far from proving — the idea that this is a pleasure the mind generates internally.

So gehst du vor

  1. Only begin this once you are reliably reaching access concentration.
  2. Notice any pleasant physical sensation that is present — warmth, ease, a gentle tingling, the pleasantness of the breath.
  3. Move attention to that sensation and keep it there, steadily, without trying to make it bigger.
  4. If rapture begins to build, let it — and keep attention on the pleasant quality rather than on your excitement about it.
  5. If it fades, return calmly to the breath and to access concentration; do not chase it.

Evidenz

The factor list and the bath-powder simile for the first jhāna are canonical (AN 5.28); the method of shifting to a pleasant sensation is Brasington’s modern instruction. Hagerty and colleagues’ fMRI and EEG study of one experienced meditator reported changes in brain activity soon after jhāna was entered, including activation of the nucleus accumbens, part of the dopamine and opioid reward system, associated with the joy he reported. (observational)

The neuroimaging is a single-subject case study (and Brasington is a co-author); it says nothing about how reliably the method works for others. The method itself rests on practitioner experience.

Grabbing at the rapture the moment it appears — excitement and wanting more pull attention off the pleasant quality, and the rapture usually collapses; the instruction is to stay with it, not to amplify it.
