Check who is riding the ox

When a session feels smooth, notice the sense of having arrived and ask, gently, who is noticing it.

Warum es wirkt

The pictures of riding home and of the ox forgotten, with the self alone, show ease after the struggle. The image still places a self apart from the experience, and that subtle division is what this practice looks at. Noticing the sense of “I have got it” makes visible the self-reference the later pictures go on to address. This is the tradition’s reading of the image; no study tests it.

So gehst du vor

  1. After a session that feels smooth, pause and notice the thought, if it appears, that your practice is going well.
  2. Ask quietly who is noticing this ease, and whether that noticer seems separate from the ease itself.
  3. Stay with the feeling of ease for two breaths without naming it or rating it.
  4. Let the question go and return to ordinary sensation: the feet, the air, the sounds in the room.

Evidenz

The stage is the tradition’s own reading of the riding and forgetting pictures, and the verses are the only source for it. No trial has tested it. (anecdotal)

Easy to turn into self-assessment. The honest limits section of this page covers that risk in more detail.

Häufiger Fehler

Using the ease as a trophy. People treat a calm session as proof they have reached a stage, then feel demoted when the calm fades. The picture is about noticing, not ranking.
