Notice the search itself

Watch the mind’s seeking as an event in itself, rather than only as the route to something you still lack.

Warum es wirkt

The first two pictures show the herder searching through wild country and then finding tracks, so the search is the story’s first movement. Attention turned onto the act of looking can see the assumption inside it: that something is missing and lies somewhere else. Seen as a pattern of attention rather than as the only road, the search loosens its grip. This reading is the tradition’s and Zhi’s interpretation of the sequence, not a tested mechanism.

So gehst du vor

  1. Pause for a minute, sit or stand, and ask quietly what you are hoping to find in your practice right now.
  2. Notice the form the seeking takes: reading another technique, checking a timer, comparing yourself with others, planning the next sit.
  3. Notice the moments when you almost feel what you are after, and where your attention goes next.
  4. When the search starts running ahead, come back to the body and the breath, and note the search as a passing activity.

Evidenz

The stage is an interpretation of the first two pictures. Zhi (2012) describes the sequence as a visual parable of the path, moving through searching, seeing, wrestling, riding and transcending the ox. No trial has tested noticing the search as a practice. (mechanistic)

This is a reading of a poetic sequence. Nothing here shows that noticing the search changes a practitioner’s outcomes.

Turning the first pictures into a task list, then trying to find the ox faster. The search becomes another way of grading yourself.
