Ask whether anyone has tested a claimed match

Before you accept that one model’s stage equals another’s, look for a published study that measured the two together.

Por qué funciona

Murray and O’Fallon (2020) say that Kegan’s construct-developmental work and the Loevinger lineage are judged by many, Kegan included, to measure closely related constructs, and that they know of no empirical work investigating their correlation. On this page’s reading, a claimed equivalence that has never been measured is an assumption, however finished the chart that shows it looks. Asking whether a match was tested separates a measured overlap from a plausible one.

Cómo hacerlo

  1. When someone says two stages are “the same,” write the claim in one sentence that names both models and both levels.
  2. Search for a study that scored the same people on both instruments, and read its method section, not only its abstract.
  3. If you find none, label the claim “plausible, untested” in your notes.
  4. If you find one, check whether its authors designed one of the two instruments.

Evidencia

Murray and O’Fallon (2020) state that they know of no empirical work investigating the correlation between Kegan’s construct-developmental model and the Loevinger ego-development lineage, and that the neo-Piagetian theories (stage theories built on Piaget’s work) of Commons and of Fischer have not been compared thoroughly with it. This practice applies that statement as a check on claims of equivalence. (mechanistic)

The statement describes the literature as Murray and O’Fallon knew it in 2020. It is not the result of a search this page ran, and newer work may exist.

Error común

Treating a neat chart as a finding. A chart that lines up names is a claim about the models, and it needs its own evidence.
