Read a published crosswalk one level at a time

Take one level from one model, find its row in the published table, and read the spread of matches instead of a single agreed rung.

Por qué funciona

A crosswalk counts how often two scoring systems place the same inventory at the same level, and the cells show the spread. In Table 1 of Murray and O’Fallon (2020), which reproduces the O’Fallon et al. (2020) replication, a STAGES 3.5 Achiever score matched the Cook-Greuter/Loevinger level 65.1% of the time and fell within one level 90.7% of the time, while a STAGES 1.5 score matched 33.3% of the time. On this page’s reading, reading the row this way shows how far neighboring levels blur, which a ladder diagram tends to hide.

Cómo hacerlo

  1. Find the crosswalk table itself, not a summary of it, and note how many cases sit in each row.
  2. Pick one level, for example STAGES 3.5 Achiever, and find its row.
  3. Read the exact-match share and the within-one-level share, and note which neighboring levels the rest of the row falls into.
  4. Write one sentence on what the spread says about where that level blurs into its neighbors.

Evidencia

Table 1 in Murray and O’Fallon (2020) reports per-level agreement between STAGES scores and Cook-Greuter/Loevinger scores from the O’Fallon et al. (2020) replication. The authors report a weighted kappa of 76%, which they place in the “substantial agreement” band, and per-level agreement that varies from level to level. (observational)

Four trained STAGES scorers took part, one of whom had learned both scoring methods, and the study’s authors include the model’s developer. The authors call the matches at levels 1.0 and 1.5 “unacceptably low,” but argue the mismatch matters little, because they expected fewer than 1–2% of adults to score at those levels. The sources read here include no independent replication.

Error común

Reading the table as a ladder, where a high within-one-level share means the two systems agree on who sits on which rung. The exact-match column answers that question, and it is lower than the within-one column.
