Move through the sixteen steps as one practice

Let a single sitting travel through body, feeling, mind and letting go, taking each group of four only as far as it is actually alive.

Por qué funciona

MN 118 states that the four groups of steps correspond to the four foundations of mindfulness: the first to the body (“the in-breaths and out-breaths are an aspect of the body”), the second to feelings, the third to the mind, and the fourth to dhammas. Practised in sequence, the breath gives continuity while the field of attention progressively widens, so calm and insight are developed within one practice instead of being two separate methods. Anālayo’s guide presents the steps as a progression a practitioner can work through in a sitting.

Cómo hacerlo

  1. Begin with the first four steps — knowing long and short breaths, the whole body, and the body calming — for as long as it takes to settle.
  2. Move to the second group — joy, happiness, knowing and calming feeling and perception — staying with what is present.
  3. Move to the third group — knowing, gladdening, steadying and freeing the mind — as the mind’s state calls for.
  4. Close with the fourth group — impermanence, fading away, cessation and letting go — then rest with the breath and body.
  5. If one group is plenty for today, stay there; the sequence is a map, not a checklist.

Evidencia

Mindfulness-based programs, which draw on breath-focused practice from this tradition, show moderate evidence for improving anxiety, depression and pain in a large systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials. That evidence is for modern program packages; the sixteen-step sequence has not been trialled as such, and its correspondence with the four foundations is the discourse’s own account. (rct)

The RCT evidence is for mindfulness programs generally, at moderate strength; it does not test anapanasati’s sixteen steps. Teachers also differ on whether the steps are a strict sequence or a set of options to move between.

Error común

Racing through all sixteen steps every sitting as if completing a list — the steps build on each other, and moving on before the body or mind has actually settled leaves the later ones hollow.
