Hold ego development without ranking people

Use what you learn about ego development to understand people, never to sort them by worth.

Por qué funciona

Stage models invite ranking, and ranking does harm twice: it flattens the person ranked, and it gives the person doing it a new way to feel superior. The research itself argues against using ego level that way. Loevinger judged the test unfit for diagnosing an individual on its own, ego level can fall as well as rise, and change is possible in adulthood. Holding the idea as a description of how someone currently makes sense of things — not of who they are — keeps it useful.

Cómo hacerlo

  1. When you catch yourself placing someone at a stage, stop and name what you actually observed: a sentence, a reaction, a decision.
  2. Ask what that way of making sense does well for them, and what situations it fits.
  3. Ask what you might be missing about them that a single observation cannot show.
  4. Apply the same rule to yourself: one hard week, or one score, describes a moment, not a fixed level.
  5. Do not use stage language about people to their faces, in hiring, or in arguments.

Evidencia

Loevinger (1979) concluded the test is adequate for research but not for individual diagnosis unsupported by other data. In a study of several college cohorts in the 1970s, ego level tended to rise only slightly, and women at one university showed a slight but consistent loss, which the authors noted challenges the assumption that stage development is irreversible (Loevinger et al., 1985). Manners, Durkin and Nesdale (2004) found a significant rise in ego level in two intervention groups of adults and none in a matched control group. (observational)

These studies speak to how stable and how measurable ego level is; none tests the ethics practice itself. The intervention study is small and targeted adults at the most common stage.

Error común

Believing that knowing the stages protects you from using them to judge. Sorting people while privately calling it understanding is the most common misuse, and it is easiest to miss in yourself.
