Test your growth where it has to show up

Check whether what you have realized and matured into is visible in your body, your close relationships, your work and your community.

Por qué funciona

Showing up, in Wilber’s later framing, is about integration — growth expressed across the four quadrants of inner experience, shared relationships, the body and behaviour, and the systems you live in. Growth that lives only in inner experience or in ideas can feel complete from the inside. Deliberately checking each outer arena gives it something to be tested against.

Cómo hacerlo

  1. Write one realization or change you consider real in yourself.
  2. Ask four questions about it: how does it show in my body and habits? In my closest relationships? In how I work? In how I take part in my community or the wider world?
  3. Mark the arena where the answer is weakest.
  4. Choose one visible action there this week — a habit changed, a repair made, a contribution offered.
  5. Ask someone who sees you in that arena whether they notice any difference, and take their answer as data.

Evidencia

Publishers Weekly’s 2017 review summarizes showing up in The Religion of Tomorrow as "attending to integrating." The publisher’s description of Finding Radical Wholeness (2024) ties the Four Quadrants to helping readers show up and be more present, and Esbjörn-Hargens’s overview describes the quadrants as the "I," "we," "it" and "its" sides of any situation. In a 2021 interview reported in Psychology Today, Wilber described showing up as serving humanity in the world. The four-arena check is an application and is untested. (anecdotal)

Showing up is the least developed of the four in Wilber’s writing, and the sources describe it loosely. Treat the four arenas as a checklist, not a definition.

Error común

Picking the arena where change is easiest to display. The weakest arena is usually the one where people closest to you would answer the question least kindly.
