Let different skills sit at different levels at once

Accept that one part of you can be advanced while another is still forming, and work on each one separately.

Pourquoi ça marche

Lectica’s summary of Fischer’s theory describes development as a web with growth through many pathways at once, not a ladder with one step per stage. Different skills can therefore sit at different levels at the same time. On this page’s inference, a single overall label would hide this, and the useful question shifts from what stage you are at to which skill is forming in a given area.

Comment faire

  1. List three skills you use at work or at home.
  2. For each, write in your own words how reliably you use it without help.
  3. Notice where the gaps sit relative to one another.
  4. Pick one gap and work on it, without assuming the others will follow.

Données probantes

Lectica’s summary of Fischer’s theory states that development is like a web rather than a ladder, with several skills at different levels at once. Fischer, Yan and Stewart (2003) is cited only because its title names the developmental web; I did not read its text. The practice follows from Lectica’s summary. (mechanistic)

This page did not check whether the web model predicts better than a ladder model. Uneven skills are also what any single-score measure would blur together, which is a reason to name each skill rather than to rank the person.
