Use the map for orientation, not to grade yourself

Read the stages to recognise that others have described what you meet — then put the map down and note what is actually here.

Pourquoi ça marche

Mahasi’s translator’s foreword says the stage descriptions were issued so a meditator could identify their experience and not be “misled by any secondary phenomena.” The same descriptions can also become an expectation to perform: Lindahl and colleagues found that interpretive frameworks influence how meditation experiences are appraised, and that certain interpretations of difficulties could lead to further difficulties. Holding the map as orientation, with a teacher’s help, keeps its reassuring use while reducing the pull to manufacture or misread experiences to fit it.

Comment faire

  1. Read the map once, with curiosity, then stop checking it during practice.
  2. Describe your experience in plain words — what you felt, how long, how it affected your day — before reaching for a stage name.
  3. Notice “where am I on the map?” as a thought and note it: “wondering,” “comparing.”
  4. Let a qualified teacher who knows you do any interpreting, and remember that teachers in other traditions read the same experiences differently.

Données probantes

Lindahl et al. documented 59 categories of meditation-related experiences and 26 categories of influencing factors, highlighting the influential and often confusing role of interpretive frameworks. Brown and Engler found that most retreatants in a three-month retreat did not progress far along the classical sequence, which argues against expecting to move through it quickly. (observational)

Neither study tested whether reading the map helps or hurts practitioners; this practice rests on their observations plus the tradition’s own intent.

Self-scoring every sitting against the stage list — which tends to produce either anxious striving or premature conclusions about attainment.
