Ground through your feet, your hands and what you can see
Turn attention outward to the solid room — the floor under your feet, something in your hands, five things you can see — rather than inward to the breath.
Perché funziona
Breathing-related tingling, unreal feelings and panic tend to pull attention inward onto the breath and the body’s alarm signals. Attention on concrete, external things gives the nervous system something ordinary to register while the breathing change settles. This is reasoning from the physiology above rather than a tested result: outward attention does not change carbon dioxide levels directly. It gives attention somewhere steady to go while the steps above take effect.
Come farlo
- Keep your eyes open. Put both feet flat on the floor and press down until you feel the floor pushing back.
- Name five things you can see in the room, one at a time, out loud or silently and slowly.
- Pick up something with a clear texture or temperature, such as a cup, a cushion or a cold glass, and describe it to yourself in plain words.
- Listen for two or three sounds outside your body and say where each is coming from.
- If any of this makes things feel stranger, drop it and keep only your feet on the floor and your back against a chair.
Prove scientifiche
No study in this review tested sensory grounding after breathing exercises. The reasoning is physiological: Meuret and Ritz (2010) link panic-related hyperventilation to low carbon dioxide, and grounding changes where attention goes rather than those levels. (anecdotal)
Grounding is a support for staying with the steps above; it does not reverse the breathing change. Some people find sensory focus stranger when they are frightened. If it does, stop it.
Errore comune
Closing the eyes and scanning the body in detail. That turns grounding back into inward attention, the focus the sensations already pull toward.

- Stop the breathing exercise now and let breathing go back to its own pace
Put the technique down completely the moment dizziness, tingling or panic begins: no next round, no slower or deeper version of the same exercise.
- Sit or lie down where you cannot fall, and stay out of water
Get onto a seat or the floor right away, away from water, traffic and anywhere you could fall, because a faint can come with little warning.
- Let breathing find its own rhythm, with no counting and no holds
Once you have stopped and steadied, stop managing the breath: no counts, no targets, no holding, just gentle breathing that you are not controlling.
- For the rest of today, rest, drink water, eat something and be with someone
Set the rest of the day around ordinary care — water, a simple meal, rest and one person you trust — and leave breathwork for another day.
- Know the signs that need a doctor or emergency care, and act on them
Chest pain, fainting, trouble breathing that does not settle, or numbness that does not pass are reasons to get medical help now.
- Return to breathwork only with a qualified teacher or clinician, or not at all
If you want to practise breathing methods again, do it later, with a qualified teacher or clinician who knows about the dizziness, and never with breath holds alone.
- If panic or frightening feelings keep coming back, talk to a professional
When fear, panic or unreal feelings follow breathing exercises again and again, or last for days, a doctor or a therapist who knows panic is the right next step.
