Know the signs that need a doctor or emergency care, and act on them
Chest pain, fainting, trouble breathing that does not settle, or numbness that does not pass are reasons to get medical help now.
Perché funziona
Breathing-related feelings overlap with those of other conditions, so the same sensations can come from more than one cause. Moffat and colleagues, in a scoping review of 62 reports on breathing pattern disorder, found that symptoms were diverse and frequently mimicked serious pathology, and that the diagnostic pathway was often prolonged. Immink and colleagues note that the brain blood-flow changes linked to hyperventilation become more concerning when combined with cardiovascular stress or reduced cardiac output. A doctor is the right person to sort out which cause applies.
Come farlo
- Call emergency services now if you have fainted or nearly fainted, have chest pain, cannot get your breathing to settle, or have numbness or weakness that does not pass.
- Then stop the exercise, and sit or lie down, away from water and the road. Do not wait to see whether the next minute is better.
- See a doctor before any breathing practice if you are pregnant, have significant heart or lung disease, or have panic symptoms. A 2026 narrative review of breathing practices names these groups as needing caution.
- Book a doctor appointment if the dizziness, tingling or panic keeps coming back over the next few days, even when no emergency is clear.
- If you have thoughts of harming yourself, or feel out of touch with reality, call or text 988 in the US (the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), find a line in your country at findahelpline.com, or call your local emergency number now.

Moffat et al. (2026) report a scoping review of 62 reports in which symptoms were diverse and frequently mimicked serious pathology. Immink et al. (2014) describe the cardiovascular stressors that raise the risk of fainting. Sharma et al. (2026), a narrative review of breathing-based practices, identify individuals with panic symptoms, significant cardiopulmonary disease, or pregnancy as populations requiring caution. (observational)
These sources describe overlap and caution. They are not a checklist of who is at risk, and they do not replace an assessment by a clinician. When in doubt, get checked.

Errore comune
Assuming a faint or chest pain is “just breathwork” and waiting it out, or deciding not to book anything because the feeling passed.

- Stop the breathing exercise now and let breathing go back to its own pace
Put the technique down completely the moment dizziness, tingling or panic begins: no next round, no slower or deeper version of the same exercise.
- Sit or lie down where you cannot fall, and stay out of water
Get onto a seat or the floor right away, away from water, traffic and anywhere you could fall, because a faint can come with little warning.
- Ground through your feet, your hands and what you can see
Turn attention outward to the solid room — the floor under your feet, something in your hands, five things you can see — rather than inward to the breath.
- Let breathing find its own rhythm, with no counting and no holds
Once you have stopped and steadied, stop managing the breath: no counts, no targets, no holding, just gentle breathing that you are not controlling.
- For the rest of today, rest, drink water, eat something and be with someone
Set the rest of the day around ordinary care — water, a simple meal, rest and one person you trust — and leave breathwork for another day.
- Return to breathwork only with a qualified teacher or clinician, or not at all
If you want to practise breathing methods again, do it later, with a qualified teacher or clinician who knows about the dizziness, and never with breath holds alone.
- If panic or frightening feelings keep coming back, talk to a professional
When fear, panic or unreal feelings follow breathing exercises again and again, or last for days, a doctor or a therapist who knows panic is the right next step.
