Predict the ripple of a change across the other quadrants
Before you make a change in one quadrant, predict what it will do in the other three, then check.
Perché funziona
Wilber’s framework holds that the four quadrants arise together, so a change in one is accompanied by changes in the others: a new rule (Its) shifts what people assume is normal (We), which shifts how individuals feel (I) and act (It). Predicting those ripples in advance catches side effects early, and checking them afterward shows whether a change is holding or being quietly undone in a quadrant you did not watch.
Come farlo
- Write down the change you are about to make and which quadrant it lives in.
- For each of the other three quadrants, write one predicted effect, including at least one unwanted one.
- Set a date two to four weeks out to check.
- On that date, compare what happened with your predictions and note any quadrant that surprised you.
Prove scientifiche
The claim that quadrants are aspects of the same occasion and change together is central to Sex, Ecology, Spirituality (1995) and A Brief History of Everything (1996). Writing predictions and checking them later is a general reflective practice; this quadrant-based version has not been studied. (mechanistic)
The idea that the quadrants always co-change is a philosophical claim of the framework, not an empirical finding, and the size and direction of any ripple is not predictable from the map.

Errore comune
Predicting only good ripples. The value is in naming the likely unwanted effect before it arrives.

Altre pratiche per Using Wilber’s Four Quadrants on a Real Problem
- Run a stuck problem through all four quadrants
Write one problem down four times — as I, It, We and Its — before you decide what kind of problem it is.
- Find the quadrant you habitually skip
Look back at how you explained your last few problems and notice which quadrant almost never appears.
- Ask each quadrant its own truth question
Check a claim with the test that fits its quadrant: is it sincere, is it true, is it fair and shared, does it fit the system?
- Separate the culture problem from the systems problem
In a team or family problem, split what people share and assume (We) from the structures they work inside (Its).
- Design a habit change with a lever in every quadrant
Back one behavior change with an inner reason, a body-level routine, a supportive relationship and a changed environment.
- Map a conflict one quadrant at a time
Lay out what each side feels, does, believes as a group, and is constrained by, before trying to resolve anything.
- Map a sustainability or community issue the integral ecology way
Look at an environmental or community issue as experience, behavior, culture and systems — and as seen by different people.
