Make it concrete with a small physical act

Mark what the session taught you with one small, private action, never by acting the fantasy out on people.

Perché funziona

Johnson's fourth step, The Rituals, holds that inner work brought to an insight should be connected to physical life, either by a small ritual or by fitting the insight into daily routine. He separates this sharply from acting out: you carry the essence of the insight into an act, never the raw fantasy into your relationships. Small, quiet rituals work better than grand ones, and talking about the experience tends to turn it back into an abstraction.

Come farlo

  1. Name in one sentence the insight or change of attitude the session brought.
  2. Choose one small physical act that embodies it: lighting a candle, a walk, a gift, a change to one habit.
  3. Do it quietly, without explaining it to others.
  4. If you notice an urge to replay the imaginary conflict with a real person, stop: carry the meaning, not the scene.

Prove scientifiche

Johnson uses the same ritual step in both his dreamwork and active imagination methods and gives many examples from his practice, together with the warning against acting out. It is a practitioner method, not a studied intervention. (anecdotal)

No controlled outcome trial of active imagination was found (PubMed search, 2026-10-14); the evidence is clinical writing and case reports from Jungian analysis. The ritual step is Johnson's own contribution rather than something Jung set out as a stage.

Errore comune

Acting out: taking the fight you had with a figure in imagination and starting it with your partner or colleague. Johnson treats this as the main way the fourth step goes wrong.
