Arrange a safe frame before you begin
Before the first session, name someone you can call, set a way to close, and know the signs that mean stop.
Perché funziona
Active imagination deliberately lowers the guard that normally keeps fantasy at the edge of the mind. Johnson writes that for most people the hard part is getting it started at all, but that a few people are so taken over by the flow of images that they cannot find their way back to the ordinary day. Jung, according to Loscalzo's reading of his writings, advised strengthening the ego first when it is not yet strong enough to meet the unconscious. A frame set up in advance (a person to call, a clear ending, known stop signs) is what lets the practice open the door without losing the way back.
Come farlo
- Before your first session, make sure there is someone you can go to or call if you become overwhelmed: a therapist, or a person who has experience with active imagination.
- Decide in advance how a session ends: set a time, then close by writing a final line, looking around the room and naming three ordinary things you can see.
- Know the stop signs: feeling flooded, losing track of where you are or how much time has passed, or images that will not settle and keep replaying into your working day. If any appear, stop and contact your helper.
- If you tend to get lost in fantasy, or are going through a fragile period, choose cooler ways of relating to your inner life for now, or do this only with a trained therapist.
Prove scientifiche
Johnson opens his section on active imagination with this precaution: have someone available to call before starting, call them if the imagination keeps taking over after a session, and do not do the practice at all if you get easily lost in fantasy. Jung wrote that the method is not entirely without danger because it can carry a person too far from reality, and he placed it in the later phase of analysis, when the ego can meet the unconscious on an equal footing. (clinical)
No controlled outcome trial of active imagination was found (PubMed search, 2026-10-14); the evidence is clinical writing and case reports from Jungian analysis. The safety guidance is the originators' clinical judgment, not a tested protocol. Anyone with a history of losing touch with ordinary reality, or who is in acute distress, should do this only with a trained therapist.

Errore comune
Treating it as entertainment or assuming nothing much will happen. Johnson compares approaching the unconscious to taking the cap off a geyser; the precautions are part of the method, not an optional extra.

- Invite the image and accept what comes
Clear your mind and wait, or start from a dream figure, an inner place or a mood, then take whoever appears.
- Turn a looping worry into a conversation
Take a fantasy or worry that keeps replaying and step into it as yourself, so it can move instead of repeat.
- Talk with the figure as yourself
Ask, listen, answer back and even refuse, staying with one figure until something resolves.
- Write it down, or give it form in paint, clay or movement
Record the exchange as it happens, in writing or another medium, so it stays an active practice.
- Bring your own values into the scene
Set limits as yourself when a figure demands something inhuman or tries to take over your life.
- Make it concrete with a small physical act
Mark what the session taught you with one small, private action, never by acting the fantasy out on people.
- Hold the tension of opposites until a third way appears
Let two conflicting positions each speak fully, refuse a quick winner, and watch for a new attitude.
