Don’t make "late stage" your new identity

Notice when developmental insight becomes a status to defend, and set it down.

Perché funziona

Cook-Greuter (2018) writes that the ego will appropriate any content, including the loftiest spiritual notions, to see itself as a hero — what Chögyam Trungpa called spiritual materialism. She names pride in how much one knows as a shadow of the stage just before Construct-aware. A late-stage self-image is exactly that kind of content: it gives the ego a new, more flattering story to protect. Catching it keeps the insight from hardening into identity.

Come farlo

  1. For a week, notice each time you use stage, awakening, or "second-tier" language, aloud or in your head.
  2. Each time, ask: "What does being this give me right now — belonging, superiority, safety?"
  3. Try describing the same thing in plain behavioral words, without any stage name.
  4. Ask one person who knows you well whether you have become preachy or distant about your growth, and listen.

Prove scientifiche

The appropriation of spiritual and developmental content by the ego, and pride in knowing as the shadow of stage 5, are both described in Cook-Greuter’s 2018 essay, which she bases on decades of ego development research. The exercise is an application of that observation and has not been studied. (anecdotal)

Stage language can be useful shorthand among people who share it; the practice is about what the language is doing for you, not a ban on it.

Becoming proud of being humble. Catching yourself at it is the practice working, not failing — the point is to notice again, not to win.
