Stay with the dialogue until the critic softens
Return to the critic's chair and respond to the need, watching for a shift from contempt to care or fear.
Perché funziona
The third component of resolution in Greenberg's studies is the softening of the critic: when the criticized side's pain and need are fully expressed, the critic often shifts from attack to concern, revealing the fear or care behind it ("I push you because I'm scared you'll be rejected"). From there the two sides can negotiate. Softening comes from contact with the other side's feeling, not from being told to be nicer, which is why the dialogue goes back and forth rather than ending once both sides have spoken.
Come farlo
- Go back to the critic's chair and hear what the other side just said. Ask the critic: how do you respond to that?
- If the critic hardens, let it speak and switch again; several rounds are normal.
- Watch for a change in tone: concern, worry, regret, or a wish to protect. Let the critic say what it is afraid of.
- When both sides sound different, let them agree on one small, concrete change in how the critic treats you.
Prove scientifiche
In Greenberg and Webster's 31-client study, after the session in which the critic softened, resolvers reported more conflict resolution, less discomfort and greater goal attainment than non-resolvers. Shahar and colleagues' pilot with nine self-critical clients found increases in self-compassion and self-reassurance and reductions in self-criticism, with medium-to-large effects maintained at six months. In a multiple-baseline study of 21 self-critical clients, adding two-chair dialogue reduced anxiety and low mood more than relationship-focused sessions alone, though self-criticism fell over both phases without a significant extra drop; a follow-up analysis of 18 clients found self-compassion rose only after two-chair work was added. (observational)
These are small studies without randomized control groups, all inside therapy. They are consistent with one another but are not proof; no completed randomized trial of two-chair work for self-criticism alone was found and read as of October 2026.

Errore comune
Ending the exercise after one exchange, or forcing a happy ending by making the critic apologise. Softening that is scripted rather than felt does not last; if it does not come, stop, note where the dialogue got to, and return to it another time.
