Why it works
How to do it
Vulnerability factors map directly to well-supported biological and psychological mechanisms: sleep deprivation increases amygdala reactivity, hunger impairs prefrontal regulation, and emotional carry-over (emotional bleed) is documented in stress research. DBT’s ABC PLEASE skill specifically targets vulnerability reduction. Arnsten’s review of stress-signalling pathways gives the mechanism a physiological basis: acute stress impairs prefrontal cortex structure and function, lowering the very regulatory capacity a vulnerability factor erodes. (mechanistic)
The specific claim that vulnerability factors predict DBT-relevant problem behavior is clinically established within DBT but not isolated in controlled studies separate from the full treatment. Dialectical Behavior Therapy was developed by Marsha Linehan and is delivered by clinicians trained in it; chain analysis and the PLEASE skill are normally taught and practiced inside that treatment, with a therapist, rather than self-administered from a description.
